[Masterlibre-list] Re: Masterlibre-list Digest, Vol 17, Issue 2

I won't be in Genoa but just wanted to let you know about the (Free) Software Licensing and Legislation Masters module I started running this year at my university.  I'm attaching the outline of the course.  I deliberately didn't deal with patents this year because none of my students had a background in IP law but will make some changes in this respect next year.

My experience was interesting and very rewarding.  My dilemma was where to start.  My experience has been that the minute you talk to lawyers about "property" there is a mental block about free software-style development.  Instead I started with a background in free software (tailored, of course, to the fact that this is part of the Masters on Commercial Law).  The students were quite resistant to the idea of not needing direct economic "incentive" at first and what really finally "released" them from this prejudice, was showing them the Euronews video about free software in Extremadura.  I will run this course again and will also be lecturing at undergraduate level in the Cyberlaw course next year.  I "control" the intellectual property side of things and, again, will be emphasising free software licensing, Creative Commons licensing as a viable alternative, indeed, a potentially better choice, than traditional ways of doing things.  I have a great deal of academic freedom where I am based and would welcome any comments, information, criticism, etc., from this list.

One more thing, I seem to have set up this list so I only get messages every so often and I haven't managed to change it.  I'd like to get messages daily - could someone email me direct at address@hidden and tell me how to change this?  Thanks.

On the afternoon the day before is imho better since it's more likely
that people will be around (since that's when the main conference is
and those arriving for the open educational conference will probably
turn up a day early anyway).

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the conference in Genova since
I have another conference in Florida. However, my colleague Jordi Serra
will attend the conference and the Open Educational Symposium, but I
think he has arranged the trip to leave when the same day that the
Symposium finishes, so it will be better if the MoLOS meeting can take
place the day before.

As the GUADEC conference is taken into account, I think I'll wait for
Anne and François comments and then I'll add my own ones ;). I think
there is not too much to say, since we were the only three members of
the MoLOS group in Stuttgart.

Cheers,

David

I agree with Martin.

I'll be in Genoa but unfortunately I have to return home in the night
between 13th and 14th as I have to give a lecture in my master
10AM July 14th.

Hi all,

I know several of you have already shown interest in participating in
the panel about postgrad studies on libre software in OSS2005. To
organize things a bit, here you have some more context. I'd like you to
confirm that you can participate, and in that case, which presentation
(title) will you deliver (for now, I have that of the UOC, which will
also be in the proceedings).

The context:

- The panel will last for about two-three hours, depending on how many
people want to make presentations (I'd vote for two hours with an open,
flexible finish time).

- It will probably be after lunch

- The panel would start with a presentation (by me, if you agree) of the
MoLOS group, invitation to join, brief description of the work done,
etc.

- Then we would have presentations of about 10 min (even less if there
were a lot of them, some like 15 min. if there were four or less)

- After the presentations, panel (I can act as a moderator, probably we
can previously sketch some interesting issues to raise), including
questions from the attendants.

Any comment will be of course appreciated.

Saludos,

Jesus.

PS: I know some of you will be at the Calibre meeting that day. If you
would like to attend the panel too, let me know. I'd like to try to
coordinate this with Brian, maybe we can find some scheduluing solution.

Hi,

After the Guadec meeting, and just before the Genova meeting, there will be
another opportunity to talk about postgratuatestudies on libre software.
We are organizing a special session on this topic within the next "Libre
Software Meeting" that will take place in Dijon (France) the first week of
July (see
http://2005.rencontresmondiales.org/sections/index_html/switchLanguage/en)
[Note : the official language of this event is french]

Here is a brief description of what we intend to talk about in this session
(http://rencontresmondiales.org/sections/conference/formation_au_libre_dans) :

"Within about twenty years, the concept of Libre software - as originaly
defined by the Free Software Foundation (see
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html)
- has been gradually structured, and has now reached maturity. The
knowledge related to Libre software is already considerable, and growing.
But one can hardly find whole curricula specifically dedicated to - or
built upon - the Libre paradigm. Yet, we think that pure technical know-how
about just a set of tools, even if well chosen, is far from being
sufficient to understand, and benefit from, the whole power of the Libre
paradigm. We feel there is a need for new curricula which would encompass
all aspects of the paradigm.

Furthermore, any activity in the so-called Information Society is requiring
"Libre-awareness" more and more, if not specific abilities. That's why we
are also advocating Libre paradigm to be paid much more attention within
curricula, not only in a software engineering perspective, but also in a
business/economic, a law/judicial or socio-cultural perspective.

Lastly, we also want to investigate how the Libre paradigm could be used as
a « pedagogical prism ». Anyone studying the Libre paradigm per se has
experienced how he/she was often led to consider many different concerns
(economic, business, property rights, ...). This is due to the tranversal
nature of the Libre paradigm: it calls into questions so many topics! Using
a Libre perspective as a lever to understand many other concerns in a
course will therefore also be debated."

This session is not schedule yet, but local organization wish to fit it in
a 1h/1h30 slot. We'll therefore try to set up a debate within this slot,
and propose to have further discussions/work in another room if enough
persons are interested.

For sure, if somebody in this list happens to come to the LSM, she/he will
be welcome.

Anyway :
1) In our introductory talk, we'll invite people to join the MoLOSS effort;
2) In our introductory talk, we'll mention examples of cursus focused on
the Libre paradigm (some have already been talk about on this list) ; if
you wish to have "yours" being somewhat "advertized", let us know ;->
3) If you have any specific question/topic to suggest to be debated, please
let us know
4) We'll try our best to report what was said in the session on this list.

Hope to see some of you in Dijon

Eric
