How is your firewall? I've seen improvements when port 4666/UDP is only open
to responses, and not new packets (that ESTABLISHED,RELATED thing from
netfilter). If the port is just open, that is, anyone, at anytime, can send
packets to it, then things deteriorate.
But don't block the port, otherwise extended search (and who knows what else)
stops working.
