Follow-up Comment #3, bug #41780 (project octave):
Differences between gnuplot and fltk often do not indicate a problem. Octave
choose to introduce the OpenGL backends (FLTK & soon Qt) to enable additional
control and allow for additional features. One of these features is control
over the positioning of the axes tick and axes labels.
Regarding the grid lines, I agree they don't look aesthetic pleasant.
