Works for me on 32-bit (released on ftp) and home-brew (MXE) 64-bit Octave on
Win7 64-bit (qt toolkit):

>> uicontrol('string','foo')
ans = -1.0013
>>


.. and I see a box with "foo" in a textbox in the lowerleft corner.
With fltk I don't see the textbox, but Octave doesn't "hang".

What Windows version do you have?
