Follow-up Comment #6, bug #44882 (project octave):

You might also want to check out previously reported bugs related to
(long-standing known issues with) type conversion:

bug #38821 is about inability to construct a Byte object from an Octave uint8
type.

bug #39073 is about Octave converting a return value into a double when it
should have stayed an Object of some type.

I am also not very familiar with JNI, but I'll take a look at your patch if I
get a chance. Might want to make sure you get testing and feedback from Philip
or other package maintainers who depend on the Java interface to make sure
this won't break anything, if you are planning to push this for 4.0.
