Follow-up Comment #68, bug #47974 (project octave):

Also, take a look at bug #48208 where there has been a lot of discussion on
how Octave is implementing markers.  In general, the markers which don't have
an interior, use the "Color" property to determine their color when
"MarkerEdgeColor" is set to "auto".  If "MarkerEdgeColor" is set to a value
then it overrides everything.  There is no concept of "MarkerFaceColor" for
markers without an interior.

As a second point, the plotted size for the '.' marker should be 1/3rd of
whatever the calculated marker size is.  This applies only to the dot '.'
marker.
