@Ben: Thanks. I think you did not attach the pdf figure.
As for the demos hanging Octave, if you have a version of Qt > 5.1 it should
work without osmesa, otherwise Octave should return an error stating that
printing invisible figures is not supported.
Does this simple example work?
figure ("visible", "off")
plot (1:10)
print bar.pdf
