Follow-up Comment #25, bug #53459 (project octave): It is easy to install a Java JRE. Then you can already use the UNO interface that invokes LibreOffice) or maybe even Apache POI - the latter is in some form present in many distro repos. But OCT is (only for .xlsx) a lot faster than any of those. For .ods OCT is a pathetically slow.
