Follow-up Comment #15, bug #53704 (project octave):

This is sounding more and more like a an issue that is specific to one system.
 It appears to be upstream in Qt libraries.

A next thought might be to try using the non-proprietary driver for Nvidia. 
It isn't a long term solution, since you need CUDA, but it would determine if
the proprietary drivers are at fault.
