Follow-up Comment #9, bug #53841 (project octave):
Since you are building from scratch, here's a diff file that you may patch
with
linux $ ~/octave/octave/octave/patch -p1 <
octave-documentation_more_robust_warning_message-djs2018may08.patch
Perhaps that will shed some light on what's happening.
When you are done testing, use "hg revert --all" to undo changes.
