Follow-up Comment #13, bug #53841 (project octave): Thanks Pantxo. I read that assistant was bundled with qt5-doc so installed ++ sudo apt-get install qt5-doc -- and then executed ++ assistant -collectionFile /usr/local/share/octave/4.4.0/doc/octave_interpreter.qhc -- This opened a GUI containing the Octave manual. Success! Then I configured and compiled with the robust help patch below. However, launching Octave (octave --gui) still gives 2 dialog boxes that need to be OK'd before the octave GUI opens. The message in the first dialog box now reads: ++ Could not copy help collection /home/octave-4.4.0/doc/interpreter/octave_interpreter.qhc to a temporary file /tmp/oct-qhelp-KOdbkB Search capabilities may be affected.
