I don't see this. For me rotate still is the default mode. Can you be more specific. What did you do and what did you expect?

No. I think the user should be in ultimate control. Automatisms are fine, but if the user decides differently the software should respect that. Maybe we can have an 'auto' and 'manual' mode for this purpose too.
  I created a C++ implementation of__calc_dimensions__
for this purpose. I envisioned that whenever new data were plotted,
__calc_dimensions__ could be called to recompute the dimension and
automatically change the GUI mode accordingly. Was there a problem
with this plan?
No, as I said, it works for me.
