It would be nice to have a unified system to do this. My hope is that
you can keep using MXE to build the app bundle on Mac OS X. There
should be no need for macports. If we use MXE, we can all
collaboratively maintain, I hope, a unified build system for Octave.

jwe has worked on allowing MXE to do native builds (i.e. no
cross-compilation). So you should be able to use MXE on Mac OS X to
build a binary for Mac OS X. In particular, as I understand it, this
might allow you to build without having to get Xcode. Is MXE able to
bootstrap a gcc on Mac OS X?
