Well, I was able to snatch the old posts in the mbox into my mail 
reader (Balsa) and move them to a safe place, but I wasn't able to put 
them with the newer posts in the maildir because Balsa doesn't think 
the directory really is a maildir when I try to open it.

But no matter; all my stuff is safe and can be read either with Pan or 
Balsa.  And I may find another mail reader that will let me open the 
maildir anyway, when I have time to try a few.
