There's a command line switch that will help with debugging here.
--debug-sockets, I think it is. Run pan --help from a console window and
get the specific switch, then run it again from there to get the output,
or pipe the output to a file for later review.
FWIW, there are a number of other occasionally useful --debug-X type
switches as well, for those interested.. Again, pan --help from a console
window should list them.
