Sounds like your dpi setting may be screwed.
GNOME Control Center >> Fonts >> Details >> Resolution.
Should be set to about 96 dots per inch judging from your screen size.
Then back to:
GNOME Control Center >> Fonts
And set all the fonts to size 10 to 12 points.
Do things look better now?
