There are probably several ways, but here is how *I* would do it:

Sorry -- forget about removing any files -- not necessary.
Instead, just go to the Groups pane and right-click on the damaged
group. Select 'Get Headers...', then download all headers. When
you enter the group again you should see all the articles.
