I'm a bit behind version-wise, and I see that problem too, recently.
I'm on version 0.138 (Der Geraet (GIT 1fcba1f git://git.gnome.org/pan2;
x86_64--netbsd)), and I certainly don't have gtk3.

I haven't found out what triggers it, so far.
