Well, Pingus checks for automake-1.6 and automake-1.7. It's a bit
unfortunate that there are so many incompatible version. On my system
exists:
automake automake-1.4  automake-1.5  automake-1.6  automake-1.7

Whereby automake is automake-1.4.

I'm quite sure that things should still work, there may be problems if
you're running wine or a few other programs, I think that 2.2 --> 2.3
was the case with the problems due to some threading changes. But it's
quite unlikely that you'll get problems and if so, a simple recompile /
apptget of a newer version should do the trick.
