I had 1.4.19-4 installed. It works with 1.5, but the package is called
automake1.5 not automake, which is why I didn't have this version
running.

Well, Pingus checks for automake-1.6 and automake-1.7. It's a bit
unfortunate that there are so many incompatible version. On my system
exists:
automake automake-1.4 automake-1.5 automake-1.6 automake-1.7

Whereby automake is automake-1.4.

automake 1.5 didn't work after all. 1.6 didn't either (I think) , but 1.7 did.
I've successfully compiled pingus now after getting hold of the right version of libxml2-dev :). "ldconfig /usr/local/lib" needs to be run, but it works after that. The only thing that worries me slightly is that the binary comes to 32.5MB. Is this normal? The static bonaries on the website were always less than 2MB.
