Luciano,

As far as I know, MP3 is not royalty free. its license is very much
closed. (its Free, as in freebie, not as in free software.)

Also, its not a very good format at all. Ogg Vorbis performs a great
deal better, with better compression and less loss. I think we should
not support MP3...
