Interesting idea. I think it'll be hairy even with a point-to-point net abstraction, but it's worth trying.

Could be interesting trying to tie the e1000 to vhost-net performance wise...

I don't think there's much chance of that - e1000 places important registers (like interrupt disable) in BARs whereas virtio puts them in the ring.
