can't give the quest more then 4.2GB ram - my host does not have more available 
- but

small(~14MB) initrd.cpio + 4GB ram still gives

"Initramfsunpacking failed: junk in compressed archive"

and there is just *one* 14MB init-binary file in the cpio - nothing more, no 
compression
