there are a couple things you should check. are the kvm modules listed 
when you do `lsmod` and does /dev/kvm exist? when you execute qemu, does 
the user executing it have permissions to read and write /dev/kvm? when 
you have the '-enable-kvm' option, does qemu return any error messages?

what version of qemu are you using? what distribution of linux? i am 
also somewhat curious as to why 2.6.32 doesn't work for you.
