Thanks for the patch. That's what I wanted to do but was too lazy :).

The only issue I have with your patch is that you make 0 the default
workspace, but on keyboards 0 is over where 10 would be if you kept
counting along the keys. So 0 is more of a workspace 10 labelled as
zero.

I would prefer workspace 1 to be the default one because 1 is the
furthest to the left. It's awkward to jump from 0 on the right to 1 on
the left. Either that or we start the workspaces from 0 down 1. So for
example you have 4 workspaces and they are bound to 0,9,8, and 7.
