Sounds like a good but painful way... Finding out what might break in
extreme situations is always a Good Thing (TM).

You can slim it down at least for memory with
linux mem=XM
at the boot prompt, where X is the number of MB of RAM you want the
kernel to be restricted to. I'm doing this on my P166MMX, too.
