 As a compromise, is it acceptable for me use the GPL but also to include a
statement in the projects documentation which merely states that the author
_prefers_ that the software not be used to harm people directly or
indirectly. A specific example of the military would be included.

 The statement would not be binding like the GPL, but would leave the
decision to peoples consciences. As was pointed out on gnu.misc.discuss,
there is no gaurantee that the target organisations would honour the
non-violence term anyway.

 I shall reapply if you see no problem with the above.

 This discussion applies more to another project which is being planned. It
will be a much larger scale image auto-classification, recognition and
retrieval system. (yes i know its an almost impossible task - but it will be
fun anyway!)

Hi,
By not allowing military organisations to use your software, it is no longer
Free Software and it cannot be hosted here. To release Free Software you
have to trust the good will of people (someone who owns a knife is not a
necessarily a murder, even though knives can kill people).

You do not need to add condition ii) either, because it is already
guaranteed
by the GPL. You just have to write a copyright notice in your programs to
retain their copyright and be able to change the license whenever you want
to.

If you decide to accept one of the licenses in the list, you can register
your
project here. If you would like to discuss additions to the GPL, you should
get in touch with the FSF.
