I found this to be true when I attempted to add a 128x64 pixel LCD controller.  
Timing is important.  Another example is a digital pressure sensor I wanted 
to simulate (via a QT slider bar).  There was a communication protocol 
implemented by simulantaneously changing several pin levels at once.
