AVR-GDB has been lacking a maintainer for several years now, since the
departure of Ted Roth.  GDB 6.x has several additions to accomodate
for the AVR, so I doubt anything like that has ever been merged into
GDB 7.x.

I'd give the latest GDB 6.x a try first.
