Just out of curiosity, what needs of you does it serve?

Keep in mind that you got a full-blown Common Lisp implementation
in there. It's the price for the flexibility. Ion (at least v3)
keep this stuff in liblua. Try compiling Ion statically and you
will notice how it will grow.

Yes, emacs only has an elisp implementation aboard, and its core is written
in C.
