Dear y'all,
I'm enjoying this discussion about the future of Swarm.
Is there a market out there for building applications for the customer?
If so, maintaining/extending the base system (though not particularly
documenting or releasing or porting or supporting it) would come free out of
keeping the system useful for the customer apps. The silly part about charging
$20k for a development platform is simply that the customer has to pay $50k
for the programmer to use it, plus putting toys on his desk, a roof, bennies,
etc., and a hugely expensive learning curve, etc. Hence, although charging
$20k for a s/w platform is outrageous, charging $100k for a solution deliverable
in < 6 mos. can be highly cost-effective.
Provided you know how to find such a market.
Just my 2 bits,
Ginger
