libffi loses under Irix. 

Grab:

  ftp://ftp.santafe.edu/pub/gnu/ffcall-1.3.1.tar.gz 

and then set up your Makefile.conf to define -DUSE_AVCALL.  There is
an Irix 5.3 configuration in there you can probably use as a guide.
