thanks for all the advice from everyone.
As I mentioned in my first post, I used gcc 2.8.1
when the make failed...mainly I used it because that
is what I used for swarm-1.3.1 and it worked fine, on
linux and under hpux 10.20 (we support both).
we do have egcs on our linux boxes:

Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/egcs-2.90.29/specs
gcc version egcs-2.90.29 980515 (egcs-1.0.3 release)
so I guess I'll just try that first, and if it works, great.
I'll report back.
I'll also be trying it under hpux, though there we don't have
egcs installed (but I suppose we could get it...)
