The main practical reason for a single access point (in fact it isn't
a single shared library with Unix, but a library that points to
multiple component libraries), was that it simplified dynamic loading
in Java under Windows.  It's also fairly difficult to use the component
libraries standalone (need to know the right initialization calls, etc).
