Well, I just rebuilt Swarm-2.1.1 from the CD.  The system is Debian
on a i386.  gcc is egcs-1.1.1.  I can run it without setText.

I just took some numbers: 600k per 10000 ~60 byte per cycle without
[super drop] and ~24 byte with.

This is not much, I'll admit, and most people won't notice it.
