HDF5 supports compression, so I can't see the sense in this.

I don't know how to do the archiving output in HDF5. At least now I have working examples that show how serialization can work with Lisp,

http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/SwarmFaq/WorkingExampleCode/objc/serialization1.m
http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/SwarmFaq/WorkingExampleCode/objc/serialization2.m
http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/SwarmFaq/WorkingExampleCode/objc/serialization3.m
http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/SwarmFaq/WorkingExampleCode/objc/serialization4.m

and I'm reluctant to spend another 2 weeks of free time trying to discern how it is supposed to be done in HDF5.
