So as to avoid confusion previous references to gcc-3.5 on these lists should be read as gcc-4.0.
Externally the compiler will not have changed that much except for the addition of Fortran 90/95 and a couple of extra libraries.
For MacOS hackers, Apple certainly intend to ship a compiler based on the new version with Tiger next year, but it is not clear whether it will be the default system compiler. My suspicion is that it will be.
The Apple gcc-4.0 compilers can be built from CVS sources on the main GCC support sites. Fetch the code using the tag apple-ppc-branch or better the latest in the Apple snapshot numbering series as of today, that is apple-gcc-1769. Such compilers can be used within the latest Panther/Xcode.
