Chris,
I don't have access to the original Source graphic files, only the PDF.  I do have Adobe's Acrobat-6 tool.
How do I perform the "merge" that you mention below?

I have noticed that most PDF's compile to a smaller SWF file.
However, occasionally the final SWF is greater than the input PDF.
 
Here is an example after using PDF2SWF, Windows ver.0.6.3; -z -j40;
 
Any ideas why the SWF is so big?

It looks like you have 13 bitmaps of 13 shoes. Each looks a polygon filled with
a bitmap to achieve a transparent outline around each shoe.
Try merging several of the overlapping bitmaps into a single bitmap(s).
That way hidden portions of the shoes won't add additional weight.
