I have serious doubts that TinyOS will survive in the long run if it
does not give up its "ivory tower" habits. Running with self-hacked
tools without feeding the hacks back to the maintainers is already
getting it a serious disadvantage in practical applications, and I
know of at least one customer who tends to give up on TinyOS. The way
it works now, it simply cannot keep pace with the rapid development in
the AVR market: adaptation to newer AVRs (they typically pop up on the
market even way faster than binutils and GCC could follow with their
releases), adaptation to new development tools (JTAG ICE mkII,
debugWire, STK600), adaptation to recent compiler versions (ATmega256x
support?, compiler bug fixes, improved optimization).

If you ask me, it will be the only way that can eventually make it
survive. UISP has been dead for more than two years now, and Ted Roth
(who used to maintain it for quite some time) once said that he
realized that avrdude appears to be the full-layer rewrite of UISP he
has always been thinking of (Ted also contributed to avrdude).
