Reported bug incl. logs & artifacts at https://bugs.gentoo.org/946128
In summary, gettext-0.23 (patched with the recent fix for --disable-nls)
breaks alpine's autoreconf, resulting in an odd message about "too many loops"
in aclocal/automake.
The build log is at:
https://946128.bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=913606
and the aclocal output with the error message itself is at:
https://946128.bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=913618
As mentioned on the bug, reverting to Gentoo's gettext-0.22.5 fixed the
problem.
I have no idea whether this is alpine's fault (doing something wrong?) or due
to something in gettext-0.23 and/or the nls fix. Unfortunately I do not really
understand even remotely enough about automake to know where to look, so any
hints are much appreciated.
I can gladly test any patches or provide more debug output.
