This normally is due to a configuration error in gnustep-base.

For some reasons, ./configure did not work in gnustep-base :-(

I remember writing a couple of messages to gnustep mailing lists recently,
giving an exact list of things to do to try figure out what the problem is
in these cases ... if you look in the mailing list archives you should
easily find them.
