At least the scroll bar mis-appearance has a simple explanation. Try
with
(setq default-frame-alist '((width . 90)
(height . 50)))
(tool-bar-mode -1)
(menu-bar-mode -1)
(when (fboundp 'scroll-bar-mode)
(scroll-bar-mode -1))
(when (fboundp 'horizontal-scroll-bar-mode)
(horizontal-scroll-bar-mode -1))
I can't explain the menu bar mishap yet.
