It depends on who was funding the project, whether you've signed contracts, and what policy the school has in place for research projects.

I would recommend emailing the other university project groups and asking them how they were able to use the GPL and ask them what steps they needed to take to be able to use it as their license.

I would assume that the school owns the code since you're students there and because the club is funded by them. Not only that, you were using school equipment to create the code. But don't take my word for it (I am not a lawyer), find someone in the school administration who deals with legal issues such as this!
