In what cases would laissezVibrer ties' height vary ?
Ties curve up or down, depending on the stem direction, and that shifts their Y-extent. To notice the difference, you can change the pitches in the example above, so that the stem would be down if alone, but points up to meet the beam.

Try it.I suspect that my confusion was based on a bad assumption: the stencil might be created several times, using a tentative direction during note-spacing, with only the preliminary staff-spacing step locking the direction into place. If we say the ties are 'cross-staff' that preliminary staff-spacing step will skip them.
