I think that the definition of cross-staff should be "Any grob whose relative extent with respect to the vertical axis group of which it is an element changes as a result of how far apart two or more vertical axis groups are." For stems this is a gradual distinction (the stem gets longer as the axis groups get farther apart) whereas for LaissezVibrer it is a binary decision (it flips based on axis groups' distances from each other). But, in both clases, they fit the definition of cross-staff that I'm proposing.
