Here are images with the previous and the new code for

\new Staff \with { \override StaffSymbol.thickness = #3 }
{ c' e' g' c' }

There are several things clear from this:
a) the normal bar line is supposed to fit with the rounding
b) stems are only marginally rounded, in contrast
c) position as well as height of a bar line is calculated such that it  
merges into the rounding

So getting to a sharper outline will be more work than this patch...  The  
totally rounded forms, however, show wrong metrics and don't correspond  
with the looks achieved by engraving tools.
