I think they should be merged, and the information you've provided on  
extenders added.  The issue could probably also do with a "needs design"  
label - what _should_ LilyPond do.  It's an interesting question - normally  
vocal music doesn't have chords, since I can't sing two notes at once.   
When there are two notes on a staff, they'd normally be separate voices and  
combined.  In this case LilyPond would align to the note in the voice to  
which the lyrics are set.  So possibly this isn't a bug at all?
