To be clear, this issue deals specifically with lyrics that
align with notes that are part of a tie or a melisma, which
are always aligned LEFT, no?  In these cases the left edge
of the lyric text should line up with the left edge of the
leftmost note.  Or am I missing something?

I suppose that lyrics that are centered on a single chord
(no tie or melisma) should be centered on the NoteColumn as
David suggests, but I hadn't thought of that case when I
posted this issue.
