Follow-up Comment #2, bug #43298 (project octave): That may be true (I was able to get most options working, even though they were compiled with llvm, but not the gui) but I don't think it changes the status of this as a bug in the build. If every dependency has to be built using gcc, then all of the Mac package managers are broken at their foundations. Right now this appears to be the only package (or one of a tiny number of packages) in homebrew and macports that will break when Apple releases Yosemite. That's octave's bug to fix.
