Follow-up Comment #8, bug #45659 (project octave): See https://bitbucket.org/snippets/mtmiller/5rb7o/autoconf-version-suffix-from-mercurial for a script I worked up to generate a mercurial revision string. Note that my goal was for it to be an empty string if building from a revision that is exactly a tagged release (so the version string would *not* have a suffix in that case).
